Native Plant Garden

Pete Haggard talks about his many years of volunteer work to create a native plant garden in front of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. Seating is limited to the first 50 attendees, on a first-come, first-served basis. The focus of the garden is coastal habitat species, using plants naturally there, donations from Lost Foods at Redwood Acres, and specimens from Pete’s personal garden in Fieldbrook. According to former City naturalist Gretchen O’Brien, Pete was involved in the conceptual meeting to create the garden, held in spring 2017, and the effort started with the two of them removing non-native plants from the area. Pete will discuss the species of plants there and what critters they attract. He and his wife Judy authored a field guide to insects of the Pacific Northwest. He maintains two other public gardens as a volunteer. This free public lecture, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, is sponsored by FOAM.
