Jeff DeMark and Jason Marak

When: Sat., July 6, 7-8:30 p.m. 2019
Blue Lake writer Jeff DeMark will read new poems, short fiction and perform original songs. DeMark has been part of the Humboldt County writing and music scene since the late 1980s. He has written five solo storytelling works, and performed three of them at the Dell Arte Mad River Festival. DeMark notes, "For several years I have been and performer and co-producer of a series of thematic story and music shows, where storytellers and a full band play songs and tell stories based on a theme such as travel, work, and fear." Jason Marak will read from a group of 100-word stories that are part of a hybrid visual/literary project he has been engaged in. His goal is to amass one hundred of these 100-word stores to present in book form accompanied by abstract, mixed media drawings he creates while working on the stories. The stories Marak will read were part of a recent show at the Redwood Art Association, 'Fictional Space', featuring Marak and artist Benjamin Funke. Marak's art/stories are available for sale at Booklegger. "We usually (with good reason) feel negatively about constraints," states Marak. "However, regarding creativity, I find restrictive conditions profoundly useful. Working within self-prescribed parameters pushes me to solutions I wouldn't arrive at working unfettered." Booklegger will be open for Arts Alive! July 6 from 6-9pm, with DeMark and Marak performing and speaking about their work from 7-8:30pm.
