Institute for Sustainable Forestry Tour

Please join the Institute for Sustainable Forestry for the second event in our 2018 field season. On Saturday April 21st we will be visiting Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area. Our planned visit to the Fools Farm in Salmon Creek is being rescheduled. Continuing in our effort to profile environmentally sustainable and economically resilient forest stewardship we will explore the evolving management of Standish Hickey. The Recreation Area is a critical part of our local tourism infrastructure. Standish-Hickey protects and provides public access to an exceptional reach of the South Fork Eel as well as a notable sequence of late Pleistocene river terraces. When severe budget shortfalls threatened its closure, the community put together a plan that has resulted in an innovative collaborative governance model between the community and State Parks. Join us as we discuss the past, present, and future of this cherished public resource. We will meet at 9 am for car pooling at Shop Smart in Redway and then 10 am at the Standish-Hickey entry Kiosk North of Leggett on Highway 101 across from the Peghouse. Bring water, lunch as well as weather appropriate clothes, shoes and sun protection. The walk will include several hundred feet of elevation gain.
