Re: “Minor Scares

When I attended HSU back in the early 1980s, the theater had a cat named Simplex (after the projector). Simplex used to sleep in the ticket window during the day. I remember going to watch a scary movie with some friends once, and at a tense moment, Simplex, who would walk along the backs of the seats, jumped into my lap. Not exactly a ghost story, but it was pretty frightening, nonetheless.

Re: “Murky Waters

I found this article poorly conceived. The KBRA was not so much a deal to remove the four hydroelectric dams as it was a deal for PacifiCorps to bypass the Endangered Species Act, as well as a water deal for the irrigators and the farmers, one that would have been a death knell for the fish in dry years. The US Congress was never interested in passing it, particularly because legislators would have had to pony up nearly a billion dollars, which clearly does not appeal to fiscal conservatives, not to mention how they view enforcing the ESA and helping Native Americans. Far better is it that the tribes collectively withdraw from this charade, unite, and bring a class action lawsuit (and invite the commercial fishermen and the environmental groups, too) against FERC for their clear violation of federal law in the form of the Clean Water Act and the ESA. Whether FERC is in favor of dam removal or not is irrelevant. The law applies to everyone, even PacifiCorps, with its 20 million dollar profit a year at the cost of everyone involved.

Re: “County Mental Health Crisis Reprieve Expected

They should fire management first and then once there is an interim appointed, then that person should take up the staffing issue.

Re: “Shell Out

It's a shame that this project didn't go forward. We'd be far better off to invite large scale green energy projects into our community in order to improve our economy, to help provide clean energy to ourselves and to other communities, and to help draw other companies here, too.

Re: “4/20 in Arcata a Bit 'Off'

Here's to raining on the 4/20 parade. The police did a public service in closing down the park to tell 4/20 folks that the smoke had to go. Arcata is far too tolerant of marijuana, illegal and unsafe grow houses, homeless camping on public property. Arcata is not benefitting much from any of this nonsense. And, yes, I know that the city rakes in tax dollars from the dispensaries. The question is if there isn't a better way to balance the books, and to be frank, the city's future depends on more progressive economic thinking than relying on pot .

Re: “Family on the Corner

This was a nice recovery for the Journal after the low point with the hanging girl article and the beer me jesus piece. Good work, Heidi!
