Coffee Break — Most days, coffee is the fuel that propels us from task to task, but fall is the perfect season to slow down and savor. Is there anything better than wrapping your hands around a hot cup on a crisp day? Even the aroma seems stronger as the winds pick up. Those who love to linger in a café or enjoy the ritual of brewing at home will find plenty of opportunities in Humboldt right now.

In this issue, we'll tour a trio of iconic coffee roasters, stopping to smell the fair-trade beans at Signature Coffee, hang in the community hub that is Old Town Coffee & Chocolates and sample the brews that have earned Humboldt Bay Coffee a devoted following. You'll also meet Berit Meyer and Brian Ferguson, the couple behind the Ramone's Cafés you see dotted all over the county. If you stop for a scone and a latte — or the gingerbread, the gingerbread is really good, too — you might see them yourself and say hello.

Fortified, we'll set off for a walk in the woods along the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail, with its massive redwood trees and gorgeous views. Go ahead and walk inside a hollowed-out, fire-scarred tree. This season's Perfect Trips will take you outside, too, for more redwoods and even some deciduous fall foliage. Urban walkers will enjoy the tour of eclectic murals in Old Town and all the cafés to stop in as you stroll the streets. And we defy any little ones traveling with you not to smile at Trinidad's marine life touch tanks or Garberville's One-Log House.

Worked up an appetite yet? If you're up for a burger, we've got just the place, though we can't promise choosing from among the options at newcomer Burger Joint, with its grassfed patties and bevy of beers, is going to be easy. For cocktails and fire-grilled steaks, we'll hit up the cozy Campground. Smoked tea and Japanese whisky? Wagyu steak with coffee-ancho chili rub? Yes and yes.

Before you leave, get a cup to go — we're sure you'll find one to suit you among the coffee accessories in our Browsing section. Even if you didn't leave much room in your suitcase, you'll want to pack up some of the adorable socks we've rounded up, too. And as for the shoes, well, you can just wear them home. They'll lead you back to Humboldt eventually.
