Spring Loaded — You're still going to need more than a bikini at the beach, but the sun is back, and spring and summer outdoor parties are gearing up all over the county. Beer? Fish? Rodeo? Classic cars? Fine art? Reggae? Yeah, we have a festival for that.

If you've been indulging in oysters on the West Coast, you've likely slurped down more than a few from Humboldt Bay. Our sweet, little Kumamotos are the stars of many a chilled plate and of our big summer party, the Arcata Oyster Fest. But you needn't wait to revel in the raw or the cooked — there'll be multitudes of mollusks to sample all over the county.

In fact, this issue takes you on a pair of boat rides with oyster meisters. First, Greg Dale, general manager of Coast Seafoods, gives you the inside scoop on the big business of oysters. Then hop aboard with Humboldt Bay Oyster Tours for an aquafarm-to-table adventure. Take that, competitive foodie friends back home!

There's plenty of fun to be had for landlubbers, too. We've got a walking tour of Old Town Eureka's murals with a little historic architecture thrown in. Hope you saved room in your suitcase, because we're steering you toward tons of art and antique browsing and thrifting opportunities.

And there's a long vacation's worth of indoor and outdoor activities — from wildlife sanctuaries to wine bars, museums to massages — for every member of your crew in our "Perfect Trips." Once you're ready for a break, we'll show you where to score the ultimate fish and chips, sip fragrant spring cocktails and dine with some of the county's best views.

Stretch out in the sun with us. We'll save you a spot in the grass.
