Arcata Artisans welcomes all to visit and experience recent work by painter Joyce Jonte' and ceramic artist Lou Marak during July. A reception for these featured artists is planned for the Second Saturday, July 13, from 4 to 6 pm at the gallery. This cooperative, member-owned and operated local artist gallery, features their newest member, Art Professor Emeritus Lou Marak and his complex, unique ceramic sculptures. Originally from Oklahoma, Marak earned his art degrees in both Illinois and New York, before heading west to teach at Humboldt State University. Along with his teaching, Marak has shown his sculptures through numerous galleries both in the US and abroad. His works are in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle WA, the Oakland Museum in Oakland CA, and the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka CA among many other museums. Since retiring from HSU Marak continues to create his unique sculptures at his home studio in Eureka. Also featured in July is local artist Joyce Jonte', well known in Humboldt County for her bold, expressive florals and her elegant life drawings/paintings of many local models. On display all year at Arcata Artisans Gallery are diverse creations by the 23 local artist members. Media employed include jewelry, ceramics, glass sculpture, photography, woodwork, painting and drawing, printmaking, stained glass, metal work and fiber arts.
